SSL-erate – Open innovation to uptake Solid State Lighting in Europe

The SSL-erate project is an european initiative with 25 partners committed to accelerate the uptake of Solid State Lighting (SSL) technology in Europe by supporting Open Innovation and bringing validated information to all relevant stakeholders.

The project started on 1st November 2013 and is aimed to engage business, entrepreneurs and organizations in the adoption of innovative lighting solutions related to SSL technology. That will provide a more positive social effect, e.g. by enabling human-centric lighting environments in preschools, schools and for elderly people.

ESADE is involved in the research and communication part of the SSL-erate project, which also has the local lighting industry cluster CICAT as a partner. Actually, CICAT celebrated last 20th May a workshop where ESADE researcher Wim Vanhaverbeke explained his Open Innovation concept and two experts presented their experience in lighting efficiency improvement from the perspective of a municipality and a sustainability-focused architect.

The project will also enhance the application of Open Innovation in the research and adoption of new technologies from both businesses and administration. That goal will be achieved creating a Toolkit on open innovation for SSL, promoting business experiments and creating an innovation platform where all partners and stakeholders can share their results and experiences.

At a higher level, the SSL-erate project also aims to address a number of socio-economic challenges Europe is facing like how to enable lighting solutions with a societal and environmental sustainability perspective, leading to a future in which Europe evolves to global leadership in SSL systems and solutions.

SSL-erate is co-funded by the European Commission as part of the Seventh EU Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development.
